One day after rewriting the Canadian men’s swimming record books, Blake Tierney will look to author another memorable moment when he competes in the men’s 200-metre backstroke final at 7:56 a.m. ET on Friday.

The 23-year-old Saskatoon native lowered the Canadian record in the event during his heat and again in his semifinal to qualify with the fifth-fastest overall time of 1 minute 55.03 seconds.

“I think at trials I didn’t really display my best stuff,” Tierney said.

“I had an [ankle] injury going into it, so wasn’t working the kick a lot. I got that sorted and this meet I’ve had better prep. You always want to be quicker, so hopefully 1:54 in the final, that would be nice.”

Summer McIntosh returns to the pool Friday in order to qualify for her latest showdown with American nemesis Katie Ledecky in the women’s 800m freestyle on Saturday morning.

The 18-year-old superstar from Toronto is three-for-three in her pursuit of five individual gold medals at this world championship, having won the 200m butterfly on Thursday to complete a golden hat trick.

McIntosh was visibly frustrated after narrowly missing out on the world record despite cruising to a comfortable victory.

Summer McIntosh wins 3rd gold medal, Blake Tierney drops Canadian record twice | THE READY ROOM

On Day 5 of the world swimming championships, Summer McIntosh achieved her goal of a third gold medal, but was visibly disappointed that she was 0.18 seconds shy of the 16-year-old world record in the 200-metre butterfly. This and more in The Ready Room with Brittany MacLean Campbell and Devin Heroux.

“It was so close and I know that last 15 metres I took an extra breath and I should’ve had my head down,” she said. “But, I mean, this is definitely going to fuel me for next season, so it leaves a little bit more fuel in the tank and really get closer and closer to that record.

“If there’s one world record that I wanted to break since the start of my career it’s this one.”

Reporter Devin Heroux will be on site in Singapore speaking to Canadians following their races, and will join The Ready Room show live on YouTube every day after finals, with Brittany MacLean Campbell hosting from Toronto. The show will include Canadian highlights, athlete interviews and analysis.
