Poilievre tweaks his tone and strategy as he faces must-win byelection, leadership review

Pierre Poilievre was feeling dejected and disappointed after the stinging federal election loss in April, sources close to the Conservative leader said, and he dialed back his public appearances for the better part of two months to reassess his strategy and regroup. After that period of self-reflection, which was marked by private calls and visits with dozens of MPs, staff and supporters, Poilievre is re-emerging from a relatively dormant period — ramping up his federal byelection campaign, weighing in publicly on perceived Liberal missteps and speaking to the press. “It’s been hard on him,” one Poilievre confidante, who spoke to CBC…

Lloyd Howell has resigned as executive director of the NFL Players Association, citing distractions his leadership has caused in recent weeks. “Two years ago, I accepted the role of Executive Director of the NFLPA because I believe deeply in the mission of this union and the power of collective action to drive positive change for the players of America’s most popular sport,” Howell said in a statement released late Thursday night. “Our members deserve a union that will fight relentlessly for their health, safety, financial futures, and long-term well-being. The British Open had a little bit of everything Thursday, from sunshine to rain, a breeze to strong gusts. And no surprise, it had Scottie Scheffler right in the mix. Former U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick handled the notorious “Calamity Corner” par-3 16th by chipping in for birdie. Harris English, whose longtime caddie couldn’t get a travel visa for the UK because of prison time served 20 years ago, put his short-game coach on the bag and made seven birdies. They were among five players tied for the lead at 4-under 67, the largest logjam after 18 holes of the…

Kansas City wide receiver Rashee Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail on Thursday after authorities said he and another driver travelling at high speeds in sports cars caused a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles and causing injuries on a Dallas highway last year. Amid tariffs and to avoid layoffs, Hamilton steel fabricator pivots from mostly U.S. to Canadian projects

A Hamilton steel fabricator says it has lost a huge chunk of its U.S. business as President Donald Trump’s steep tariffs persist. But Walters Group has also picked up enough work in Canada — including for the new Calgary Flames arena — to avoid layoffs for the time being, said executive vice-president Walt Koppelaar. He told reporters Wednesday that before the U.S. imposed tariffs earlier this year, about 70 per cent of Walters Group’s steel fabrications were exported to the U.S. Now, that number is nearly zero.  “We have to be very focused on Canadian work,” Koppelaar said. “We got things going on south of the…

Canada’s Olivia Smith signs with Arsenal for $1.84M Cdn, setting women’s soccer fee record

Canada forward Olivia Smith became the most expensive player in women’s soccer history at a reported one million pounds ($1.84 million Cdn) when Arsenal signed her from Liverpool on Thursday. The new benchmark in women’s soccer would surpass the 900,000 pounds ($1.1 million) Chelsea paid when signing Naomi Girma from the San Diego Wave in January. Smith’s four-year deal highlights the increase in spending in women’s soccer, with transfer records regularly broken. Zambia striker Rachael Kundananji joined Bay FC from Madrid CFF for a record $788,000 last year, and that figure was quickly exceeded by Girma’s move to Chelsea. As recently…

Women’s marathon world record-holder Ruth Chepngetich was provisionally suspended for a positive doping test on Thursday. Track and field’s Athletics Integrity Unit said Chepngetich tested positive for a banned diuretic and masking agent in March and “opted for a voluntary provisional suspension while the AIU’s investigation was ongoing.” The Kenyan runner set the world record by almost two minutes at the Chicago Marathon last October in two hours nine minutes 56 seconds. It was her third win in Chicago. She also won the marathon at the 2019 world championships in Qatar, where the women’s race started at midnight to avoid extreme daytime heat.…
