Arsenal won the league championship in May. CBC Sports has not independently confirmed the report. The fee surpasses the previous high of $1.67 million Chelsea paid for American Naomi Girma in January. Smith, a forward, joined Liverpool a year ago from Sporting…

Desiree Scott jokes she has been trying to retire for years. But the veteran midfielder, who turns 38 on July 31, is still going strong with Ottawa Rapid FC of the Northern Super League. “New opportunities just keep knocking on my door. So I’m grateful for them,” she said. “I had a friend who told me before ‘Run ’til the wheels fall off’ and I’ve got about three left on the old vehicle here. “The perfect full circle to end in a pro league that I’ve dreamed about and talked about.” Scott called time on her international career May 31…

Canada closed out the year unchanged at No. 31 before setting a new mark in April at No.…

It would be a mistake to underestimate Hamilton-based Forge FC just because it’s a Canadian Premier League team. Tristan Borges and Kyle Bekker scored three minutes apart to lift Forge over CF Montreal on Wednesday with an aggregate score of 3-2 in the quarterfinal of the Canadian Championship. Forge has now eliminated Montreal in the club tournament’s quarterfinals in back-to-back seasons. “I always think the gap (between MLS and the CPL) is not that big, the gap is in the finances,” said Forge head coach Bobby Smyrniotis, who will attempt to reach his second-ever Canadian Championship final with Forge. “On…

CF Montreal and Forge FC enter the second leg of their Canadian Championship quarterfinal with different outlooks. Montreal hosts Forge at Stade Saputo on Wednesday night after falling behind 1-0 to the lower-tier Canadian Premier League side in the first leg at Hamilton Stadium on May 20. Mired at the bottom of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference with a 3-13-5 record, Montreal needs a result at home to salvage any realistic chance of winning a trophy this season. “It’s a final,” interim head coach Marco Donadel said. “It’s a super important game for us, where every detail will be important.…

The chief justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court says all criminal trials that were to take place in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and New Westminster during the FIFA World Cup next year will have to be rescheduled. Chief Justice Ron Skolrood says in a notice posted Monday that the tournament is expected to have “very significant impacts” on court operations at the affected Supreme Court locations. The notice says neither jury nor judge-only criminal trials will take place at the four locations from June 12 to July 8, 2026, and that no civil jury trials will take place either. It…

Edson Alvarez scored a tiebreaking goal in the 77th minute after a video review reversed an offside call, and Mexico beat the United States 2-1 on Sunday night for its record 10th Concacaf Gold Cup title. Chris Richards put the U.S. ahead in the fourth minute, heading in a Sebastian Berhalter free kick for the second time in the tournament, but Raul Jimenez tied the score in the 27th with his third goal of this Gold Cup. Mexico was awarded the free kick when Diego Luna fouled Alexis Vega on a flank. Johan Vasquez flicked the restart across the goal mouth…
