For years, the character tension surrounding Rory McIlroy emerged four times per season. As his major drought stretched on and on, and his quest for the career Grand Slam grew less and less likely with each Masters loss, McIlroy’s mental battles always came into focus — whether it was a new approach, a gutting collapse or an untimely injury. Then, in April, he finally did it. McIlroy won the Masters, becoming just the sixth player ever to achieve the career Grand Slam. You could see what it meant throughout his roller-coaster final round, and especially as he collapsed on the…

Bears don’t need a tee time to get on the green. When she went to the Kananaskis Country Golf Course to hit the links earlier this month, Calgary golfer Jess Lawson didn’t imagine she would be sharing the back nine with a black bear. “We were very grateful for our partner to be the bear on the last hole,” she said. “It was like a nice little homage to golfing in the mountains.” A black bear photographed by golfer Jess Lawson at the 18th hole of the Kananaskis Country Golf Course on May 11, 2025, during the season’s opening weekend.…

Aphrodite Deng got to live out the dream of every competitive golfer, playing two rounds with the best in the world and excelling on the course, and she’s just 15 years old. Deng played alongside Nelly Korda of the United States at the Mizuho Americas Open, winning the junior tournament on May 11 while the American tied for fifth in the LPGA Tour’s event of the same name. “It was a really fun experience,” said Deng, who also won the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior Invitational in March by six strokes. “I was trying not to think too much about…

When Nick Taylor’s putter soared through the air on the 18th hole at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto, it changed the course of Canadian golf. The beginning of the decade had been rough for the sport in the country. In 2020 and 2021, the pandemic led to the cancellation of the RBC Canadian Open – even as, below the surface, participation in the sport was soaring. When the tournament finally returned in 2022, it went head-to-head with the inaugural LIV Golf event in London — a double-edged sword with increased attention and a notable winner in Rory McIlroy…

A PGA Championship missing star power got the best in golf Saturday when Scottie Scheffler delivered a clinic over the closing stretch at Quail Hollow for a 6-under 65 and a three-shot lead going into the final round in Charlotte, N.C. Scheffler started his big run with a 3-wood to just inside three feet on the reachable par-4 14th for an eagle, causing so much hysteria that Bryson DeChambeau had to back off his putt across the lake at the 17th. It ended with an 8-iron from the seam of a divot to just inside 10 feet for birdie on…

Scottie Scheffler wasn’t paying attention to all the drama next to him in a star-power group or ahead of him on the leaderboard Friday at the PGA Championship. Scheffler kept doing his best with the swing he had, responding to his lone bogey with a pair of birdies until he was within striking distance of 36-hole leader Jhonattan Vegas and became a large presence on leaderboard filled with so much inexperience in the majors. “I like the position I’m in going into the weekend,” Scheffler said after a 3-under 68 left him only three shots behind at Quail Hollow. Vegas…

Jhonattan Vegas played the best golf hardly anyone saw Thursday in the PGA Championship. Brilliant sunshine after three days of rain brought out a full house of spectators expecting a great show in Charlotte, N.C. They just didn’t get it from who they came to see — Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele — and most of them were long gone when Vegas worked his magic in the late afternoon. Two good par saves. Two short birdies. Another par save. And then three birdies at the end for a 7-under 64, giving the 40-year-old Venezuela his best score in…

It may be the least prestigious of the four men’s golf majors, but there are plenty of good storylines to follow when the 107th PGA Championship tees off Thursday at pretty Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. Such as: The pressure is off Rory McIlroy. The world’s second-ranked player ended his decade-long major title drought in dramatic fashion last month, recovering from another late meltdown to win the Masters in a playoff against Justin Rose. McIlroy’s…
